Cataracts
Modern cataract surgery involves removing the cataract through a very small opening on the cornea and replacing the cloudy lens with a clear plastic implant called an Intraocular Lens (IOL). The lens implants are made of acrylic, silicone or other types of inert plastic that remains indefinitely in the eye. There are different types of IOLs that provide different levels of vision after cataract surgery:
- Monofocal IOLs: Providing vision for one distance only
- Lifestyle IOLs: Providing vision for multiple distances,
often eliminating the need for astigmatism correction
